Hard to Come By (Hard Ink #3) by Laura Kaye

Available on

Synopsis:

Caught between desire and loyalty…

Derek DiMarzio would do anything for the members of his disgraced Special Forces team—sacrifice his body, help a former teammate with a covert operation to restore their honor, and even go behind enemy lines. He just never expected to want the beautiful woman he found there.

When a sexy stranger asks questions about her brother, Emilie Garza is torn between loyalty to the brother she once idolized and fear of the war-changed man he's become. Derek’s easy smile and quiet strength tempt Emilie to open up, igniting the desire between them and leading Derek to crave a woman he shouldn’t trust.

As the team’s investigation reveals how powerful their enemies are, Derek and Emilie must prove where their loyalties lie before hearts are broken and lives are lost. Because love is too hard to come by to let slip away…

Review:

Man I really thought the first book in this series would be my favorite, but somehow the author keeps writing books where I love the characters more and more! Hard to Come By was my favorite yet!

Derek is part of the ex-special forces team that was not so honorably discharged after some stuff went down overseas. Stuff that didn't happen the way the Army said it did and he is back with the reaming guys on his team to figure out what happened and clear their names. This is not a standalone book. You really need to read the first books because the overall storyline is continued in this story.

Derek is the computer guy on the team. He grew up in foster care and never really had a family until he made one in the Army. He would do anything for his brothers. They have gotten some good intel on how to find a guy who might be able to answer some of their questions into who did this, but to do so they have to stake out this guys sister, Emilie.

When Derek first sees Emilie he is drawn to her. He knows he shouldn't get involved because they have so much on their plate, he is lying to her about why he is in town and what he is doing, and the team isn't sure they can trust her. Only his gut tells him they can and he can't help but want to spend as much time as he can with her.

Emilie is a counselor and she knows her brother has come back from the military a changed man. They used to be so close, but lately he has been worrying her. She might have to file for an emergency psychiatric evaluation before he hurts someone or himself. But that is going to kill their mom, but she knows it is time that she does. She can't just look the other way as he spirals out of control.

These two were so sweet together. Emilie is just trying to start over after a failed marriage that left her shaky, and Derek seems like the perfect guy. And even though he does really care about her and want to be with her for real, he knows he has to tell her who he really is and what is really going on. That they are trying to find her brother as he is mixed up in some bad stuff. I loved how this all played out. Man my heart broke for Derek at times because here he as found someone he might be able to make a life with, but because of the situation he might lose her forever. I wanted nothing but wonderful things for both of them because I loved them both so much.

Now the overarching storyline got a little intense in this book. There were a lot of things that happened that I wasn't expecting, but was also glad for though I don't know how they are going to get out of this one. They thankfully have some new allies that will help, but I can't wait to start the last book and see how they wrap everything up!
