Promises Hurt (Promises #1) by Elle Brooks

Synopsis:

I wasn't planning on falling for Ethan Jamison, hell I wasn't planning on our paths ever crossing. He’s the most popular guy at school and a complete player. Me; I’m the perpetual good girl, trying to carry out one last request. But when you make a promise, how far do you go to see it through?

~ Blair

It’s a running joke that I’m a terrible liar, if only people knew the truth. My whole life has been spent making excuses and deflecting questions. I was pretty good at it until Blair Thomas entered my world. She saw through the mask that everyone is so willing to accept. She makes me want to tell her all my secrets, but can she promise to keep them?

~ Ethan

Review:

Promises Hurt was a better read than I was expecting. It was one of those reads where I was expecting more drama, but I am really glad the author didn't go there. The story was sweet and I'm glad I got to know these two characters. Though be warned - it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger so have book two ready.

Blaire is one of those girls who flies under the radar. Her best friend, Emily, was diagnosed with cancer when she was 15 so she has been dealing with that. She doesn't go out and party or anything like that. She wouldn't feel right about going and doing things when Emily couldn't. Only Emily is no longer there and now Blaire has to figure out how to go on without her. Emily did leave her with a bucket list of things she was not able to complete before she died. She hoped Blaire would complete them for her and it is that last little attachment to her best friend.

Ethan is a popular ladies man at school. He has never had a girlfriend, he just sleeps with girls then moves on to the next one. He was Emily's crush and as such Blair never really paid that much attention to him. After all he was Emily's. Only now that she is gone and she gets thrown together with Ethan she finds that he is not at all how she assumed. He is not that arrogant, self-centered jerk she thought he would be. He is sweet and kind and totally seems to like her! And she likes him...maybe a little too much.

Blair and Ethan were so sweet together. They both just fall into this easy camaraderie that just works. Neither of them have the happiest of pasts, Blair and her mom love each other, but there are some slight problems there. Ethan's family is not cool at all so he tries to hide what is really going on. Only with Blair he wants to be open and honest. He wants Blair to know everything. He wants to trust her and be with her and plan a life together. He is just counting down the days until he graduates and heads off to college. The days until he can escape his home life.

I was expecting more drama with the relationship, taking longer to get together or having more girls make Blair insecure or something, but there really wasn't much of that. It just felt natural like it all could really have happened. This was really just the story of Blair and Ethan and their relationship. Most of the issues were with their environment, not between them which was nice. Oh but the end! It is a bit of a cliffhanger so I need to go read the next book to see what happens. Though I am a bit nervous to start it...I don't want bad things to happen to these two! They should just be together forever! Hopefully it all works out in the end...
