Rival (Fall Away #2) by Penelope Douglas

Rival: A Fall Away Novel

Synopsis:

Madoc and Fallon. Two estranged teenagers playing games that push the boundaries between love and war…

She’s back.

For the two years she’s been away at boarding school, there was no word from her. Back when we lived in the same house, she used to cut me down during the day and then leave her door open for me at night.

I was stupid then, but now I’m ready to beat her at her own game…

I’m back.

Two years and I can tell he still wants me, even if he acts like he’s better than me.

But I won’t be scared away. Or pushed down. I’ll call his bluff and fight back. That’s what he wants, right? As long as I keep my guard up, he’ll never know how much he affects me….

Review:

Rival was an interesting read. I really enjoy Penelope Douglas' work, and this was no exception. Going into it I wasn't sure how much I would like it as it seemed like it would be very similar to the Bully story, the whole I hate you but I love you thing, so I was worried it would just be the same. It was similar, but different and I enjoyed reading it.

Madoc and Fallon are step siblings. Two years ago Fallon left suddenly and they both are angry about it. They both seem to hate the other for things that happened, things they think happened. My one complaint with the story is I do wish we could have seen how they initially got together. You get little glimpses of how it was back then, but I wish we had that story as well. I don't really understand what happened between them, how they got together, as they seemed to hate each other back then as well.

So Fallon is back seeking vengeance. She has been angry with those who hurt her and she wants them to pay. Madoc is also seeking some vengeance of his own. He wants to ruin Fallon like she ruined him. They both want to hurt the other, but neither of them know the whole story. Neither of them know what really happened two years ago and there are just a lot of secrets going around. When everything finally comes out in the open can they make everything work out?

Most of the story is Fallon trying to hurt those who hurt her. She can't help falling for Madoc again, especially once she learns everything that happened. They were kind of great together, but really volatile. Madoc was actually a really good person which surprised me. I didn't like him much from the first two books, but learning why he was the way he was helped. He really grew on me and I loved how fun he was with Fallon once they started to figure things out. Really from the moment he learns what happened he just changes into this happy guy who wants to be with Fallon. He was so cute. It was really a great read watching the two of them come together again. It was nice seeing them work everything out even with some terrible people trying to ruin everything for them. A really great read.
